USC SAS signs MOA with UHiroshima Biosphere Science

The University of San Carlos School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Hiroshima University Graduate School of Biosphere Science during a trip to Japan on March 17-22, 2019.

The USC delegation was led by Asst. Vice President for Academic Affairs Fr. Narciso A Cellan Jr., SVD, and included SAS Dean Dr. Delia E. Belleza, Department of Biology Chair Dr. Paul John L. Geraldino, as well as Education Dean Dr. Rita May P. Tagalog, and Engineering Asst. Dean Engr. Ricardo L. Fornis. Dr. Tagalog and Engr. Fornis held initial discussions with their Hiroshima University counterparts for academic linkage between the School of Education and the School of Engineering, respectively.

The MOA with the Graduate School of Biosphere Science is an academic exchange agreement for both students and faculty members. Currently, M.S. Biology student Kathlyn Buendia is in Hiroshima University to complete part of her thesis in their laboratory. Buendia is supervised by Assoc. Prof. Makoto Hirayama of the Food Science and Biofunctions Division. Hirayama, who is expected to visit USC to give a lecture as part of the exchange program, is a protégé of Professor Emeritus Kanji Hori, a world renowned expert in algae.

The USC delegation also made courtesy calls to the offices of the Vice President for International Affairs Prof. Yasushi Maruyama, Dean of Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences Prof. Makoto Iwanaga, Dean of Graduate School of Education Prof. Masataka Koyama, and Dean of Graduate School of Engineering Prof. Yoshihisu Kawahara.
