US ambassador opens EducationUSA center

Cebuanos and students in the Visayas and Mindanao can now avail for free advising services as (from left) Fr. Dionisio M. Miranda, SVD, U.S. Ambassador Hon. Sung Y. Kim, and Fr. Aleksander Gaut, SVD, opened the EducationUSA Advising Center.

Ambassador of the United States to the Philippines Hon. Sung Y. Kim opened the EducationUSA Advising Center yesterday, March 29, 2019, at the Josef Baumgartner Learning Resource Center (LRC) in Talamban Campus. Assisting him during the ribbon cutting ceremonies were University President Fr. Dionisio M. Miranda, SVD, and VP for Academic Affairs Fr. Aleksander Gaut, SVD.

EducationUSA is a network supported by the U.S. Department of State that seeks to promote access to information on U.S. higher education opportunities by Filipino citizens by providing free advising services and resources. Prior to today’s opening, EducationUSA advisers are based at the American Center in the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Manila. The center at the LRC is the first such center outside of Manila and is located in the LRC’s International Section at the upper 2nd floor of the sprawling LRC complex.

Earlier, EducationUSA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of San Carlos for the establishment of an advising center in Cebu City.

The agreement was signed by USC President Fr. Dionisio M. Miranda, SVD and Matthew Keener, Cultural Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines (see photo), last March 27, 2019 at the Board of Trustees Conference Room, 4th floor, Dingman Building, in the Downtown Campus.

Also present at the signing were Fr. Aleksander Gaut, SVD (VP for Academic Affairs), Christine Grace Catindig (Cultural Affairs Specialist/EducationUSA Adviser, U.S. Embassy Philippines), Maxie Dorren Leva-Cabarron (Director, USC Library System), Irish G. Concepcion (Social Science Librarian/EducationUSA-Cebu adviser), and Princess Grace Wooden (Cultural Affairs Specialist/EducationUSA Adviser, U.S. Embassy Philippines).

EducationUSA recently held an education fair in Cebu on February 28, 2019 at the Radisson Blu Hotel (see related story).
