USC honors alumni-champions

Nine individuals and one group, as well as recent bar and board placers, were honored tonight by the University of San Carlos and the USC Alumni Association during an awards conferment ceremony and fellowship tonight, October 19, 2019, at the Grand Convention Center of Cebu.

After welcome remarks by Ronald S. Po (Chair, USC Alumni Association), University President Fr. Dionisio M. Miranda, SVD cited recent efforts by USC in social entrepreneurship and challenged the alumni to “outdo your University.” Bar and board examinations topnotchers and placers were then honored before conferment of alumni awards, namely Engaged and Inspiring (group category), Outstanding Young Carolinian, and Outstanding Carolinian awards.

Carolinians ALUMNIChem, Inc., the alumni association of the Department of Chemistry, was recognized in the group category for their scholarship funds which, since its inception in 2006, has helped 12 students complete their B.S. Chem. education.

Outstanding Young Carolinian awards went to Daryl Balmoria-Garcia (B.S. Arch. 2004, Founder and Principal Architect, Dream Architects), Chad Audric T. Noval (B.F.A. Advertising Arts 2006, Founding Partner and Creative Director, NVISION Digital Solutions), and Alan A. Silor (B.S. E.C.E. 1994, Asst. Secretary, Department of Information and Communications Technology).

Six distinguished alumni received the Outstanding Carolinian awards namely Samuel L. Chioson (B.S. C.E. 1988, President and CEO, Chioson Development Corp.), Dominica Bardinas-Chua (Ll.B. 1984, President and COO, Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc.), Carolyne Lumakang-Go (B.S.C. Accounting 1982, CEO MagicMelt Foods, Inc.), Benedict Y. Que (B.S.C. Accounting 1982, President and CEO, Golden Prince Hotel and Suites), Efren E. Uy (B.S. M.E. 1983, Founder, President and CEO, F2 Logistics Group of Companies), and Larry S. Villaluna (B.S. Ch.E. 1970, President, ELAN Holdings Corp.).

Voicing the alumni perspective and response to the awards were Asst. Sec. Silor and Engr. Uy. Speaking to Fr. Miranda, Engr. Silor said, “Father, I have no money” but pledged his service aimed to improve the ICT conditions in the country. Engr. Uy for his part related his journey from a job seeker to his current position at F2 Logistics, concluding that “Everything starts small, but dream big.”
