USC grabs two awards in 41st National Book Awards

The USC Publishing House received two awards from the National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Manila Critics’ Circle during the 41st National Book Awards on February 24, 2024, at Areté, Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City.

From left: Julius P. Relampagos, Ph.D. (Manager, USC Publishing House), Sri Pratiwi (graduate student of Michael Culinane, receiving the award on his behalf), and Hope S. Yu, Ph.D. (Director, Cebuano Studies Center; served as jury for the NBDB).

USC nominated two books from its roster of publications, namely Michael Cullinane’s The Chinese Mestizos of Cebu City 1750-1900 and Sinug-ang: A Cebuano Trio written by Erlinda Alburo, Ester Tapia, and Corazon Almerino.

A total of 230 book entries were submitted by different publishers nationwide. Both books nominated by USC won two of the 35 accolades given.

Julius P. Relampagos, Ph.D., Manager of USC Publishing House, received the awards on behalf of the winning authors. Hope S. Yu, Ph.D., Director of the USC Cebuano Studies Center, was also present during the awards ceremony. Dr. Yu also served as jury for the NBDB.

The USC Publishing House will organize an event later this semester to honor the authors. This will also coincide with the planned launching of the new online bookstore and The Cebu Almanac special pandemic and recovery edition.

Last December 2023, the NBDB and Manila Critics’ Circle announced these awards on their social media sites:

  • Winner of John C. Kaw Prize for Best Book on History
The Chinese Mestizos of Cebu City 1750-1900 by Michael Cullinane
  • Winner of Best Anthopology in Binisaya
Sinug-ang: A Cebuano Trio by Erlinda Alburo, Ester Tapia, and Corazon Almerino
