Two M.S. Ch.E. studes win ACB Young Scientist awards

Two M.S. Ch.E. students from the Department of Chemical Engineering, namely Engr. Rose May Igdon and Engr. Jayhiel Malila, won in the Young Scientist Competition (YSC) Awards under the oral presentation category in the 14th Asian Congress on Biotechnology (ACB 2019) held in Fullon Hotel-Tamsui Fishermen’s Wharf in New Taipei City, Taiwan last July 1-4, 2019.

Engr. Igdon ranked first place for her master’s thesis entitled Optimization of Direct Dilute Acid Hydrolysis of Non-delipidated Copra Cake to Maximize Production of Reducing Sugars and Subsequent Lipid Recovery while Engr. Malila was awarded second place for his research study entitled Optimization of the Esterification of Coconut Oil Fatty Acid Distillate (COFAD) using Amberlyst 15 as Heterogeneous Acid Catalyst. The two students were among the 120 competitors from various countries who participated in the YSC Awards for the oral and poster presentation categories.

A total of five delegates from the University of San Carlos were among the 13 Filipino participants that represented the country in the international research conference.

Also giving oral presentations were School of Engineering Dean Prof. Evelyn B. Taboada, faculty member Dr. Ian Dominic Tabañag, and Doctor of Engineering student Engr. Francis Dave Siacor. Prof. Taboada presented a study on the Kinetic and Parametric Studies of the Extraction of Butter from Waste Mango (Mangifera indica L.) Seed Kernel. Dr. Tabañag discussed his work entitled Valorization of Lignin Derived from Spent Degumming Liquor for Solid Biofuel Productionwhile Engr. Siacor presented his study entitled Effect of Temperature and Aqueous Ethanol Concentration on the Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Mango (Mangifera indica L.) Seed Kernel.
