Team USC is 8th in Psychology quiz bee

Team USC ranked 8th out of 58 participating universities at the 31st Annual Psychological Association of the Philippines Junior Affiliates (PAPJA) Convention held on last January 25, 2019 at the SMX Convention, Manila.

Psychology students Christine Mae Alferan, Faith Mabuyo Miradores, Robbie Ybañez, and Kalyn Galon comprised Team USC with coach Calvin Calvadores and assistant coach Kevin Ken Remedio. Team USC made it through the qualifying round, where each participant individually took a test, and into the final round, where the team answered 20 psychology-related questions together. Correct answers were awarded 10 points, while each wrong answer meant a deduction of 5 points.

Alferan remarked, “As 3rd year students, we knew that there were a lot of topics unknown to us, so finding out we made it to the top 10 despite all that was definitely satisfying.”

The other universities that made it to the top 10 were Ateneo de Manila University, Angeles University Foundation, Far Eastern University, Our Lady of Fatima University, Pamantasan ng Lungsod Manila, St. Mary’s University, University of Makati, University of the Philippines, and University of Santo Tomas. This is the 3rd consecutive year that USC has placed in the PAPJA quiz bee.

PAPJA annually holds a two-day convention, usually in Metro Manila. Its goal is to give psychology undergraduates an important venue to further explore the discipline and practice of psychology in the country. Aside from the quiz bowl, other competitions such as the Transcendance dance competition, Psyclips video-making competition, and Apperception T-shirt designing competition also took place during the convention.
