Bio faculty receives Ph.D. awards

Dr. Norielyn N. Abalos, faculty member of USC Biology, received two special awards from the University of the Philippines-Diliman (UPD) on July 13, 2021.

Biology faculty member Dr. Norielyn N. Abalos received two awards during the UPD IB recognition program.

The awarding ceremony took place during UPD’s Institute of Biology (IB) Recognition Program where Dr. Abalos was recognized as the Most Outstanding Doctor of Philosophy Graduate. On top of that, she also received the Best Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation for her study entitled, “Cytotoxicity of bark and leaf extracts and fractions from Aglaia loheri Merr. (Meliaceae) against selected human cancer cell lines.”

The award-winning research was funded by the Department of Science and Technology-Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (DOST-ASTHRDP) and conducted at the UPD (IB) Mammalian Cell Culture Laboratory under the supervision of Professor and UP Scientist Sonia Jacinto, Ph.D.

Dr. Abalos will officially obtain her Ph.D. from UP on July 25 during the university’s virtual 110th General Commencement Exercises.
