Bio alumna wins 1st prize for health research poster

Representing Central Visayas, Biology alumna Elaisa Mae Jamora (B.S. Biol., 2017) won first prize in the National Research Poster Exhibit Contest during the 11th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week celebration on August 24–25, 2017 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City, Manila.

Her paper entitled “Courtship duet between the female and the male Aedes aegypti queenslandensis (Theobald) (Diptera: Culicidae) under laboratory conditions” was co-authored by classmate Zaira Isabelle Gines, and faculty members Claude Ceniza, Dr. Rommel Bacabac, and Dr. Frances Edillo (thesis adviser).

Jamora has started her medical studies at the Cebu Institute of Medicine while Gines is now a dentistry student at Southwestern University.

The 11th PNHRS Week celebration had the theme “Research and Innovations in Health: Empowering and Transforming Communities.” The event provided a platform for the different stakeholders in health research and development to interact, learn from each other, share information and experiences, voice their concerns, and contribute research-based solutions to health problems.

Previously, their study won second place during the Students’ Poster Exhibit Contest during the 2nd Annual Central Visayas Health Research and Development Innovation Conference held on July 22, 2017 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. The study also earned best paper honors during the 29th Enrique Schoenig Annual Biosymposium held on March 4, 2017 at the USC Talamban Campus.
