Providing an opportunity to learn from leading researchers in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and the Internet of Things (IoT) domains, the University of San Carlos held the 4thSummer School on Practical Wireless Sensor Networks Development (SenseDev19) on July 22-26, 2019 at the Virtual Training Room of the Josef Baumgartner Learning Resource Center in Talamban Campus.

The Summer School was achieved through the efforts of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (DEEE) in collaboration with Coventry University, U.K. and funding support from the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) grant of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

SenseDev19 course director Engr. Isabelo Rabuya welcomed Prof. Elena Gaura (Associate Dean-Research, Faculty of Engineering, Environment, and Computing, Coventry University), Prof. James Brusey (Faculty Research Centre in Fluid and Complex Systems), Dr. Kriti Bhargava (Research Fellow, Faculty Research Centre in Fluid and Complex Systems), and Engr. Gene Fe Palencia (faculty member of DEEE, pursuing a PhD at Coventry) who served as resource persons for the workshop.

The five-day event featured a series of lectures on the fundamentals and applied aspects of WSNs with hands-on exercises on Firely motes using Contiki operating system, WSNs simulation in Cooja, and group projects demonstration on practical WSNs. This provided the participants with a solid understanding and experience to anchor their research in this field.

This year’s SenseDev is aimed at faculty researchers in Philippine Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs). Forty (40) participants in the summer school came from 19 HEIs; i.e. six from Luzon namely Adamson University (AdU), Bulacan State University (BulSU), De La Salle University (DLSU), Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL), Mapua University (MU), and University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB); seven from the Visayas namely Bohol Island State University-Main Campus (BISU-MC), Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U), Cebu Technological University-Moalboal Campus (CTU Moalboal), Holy Name University (HNU), Samar State University (SSU), University of San Carlos (USC), and University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR); and six from Mindanao namely Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU), Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), Mindanao State University-Gensan (MSU-Gensan), Unibersidad de Zamboanga (UZ), University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP), and Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan (XU-AdC).
