Biology alumna wins 1st place in nat’l health research confab

Dinesse Labiros, a B.S. Biology graduate, won first prize in the national oral presentation contest (student category) during the 12th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) week at CAP John Hay Trade and Cultural Center in Baguio City on August 6-9, 2018.

Labiros was a representative of the Central Visayas Consortium for Health Research and Development (CVCHRD). Her paper entitled “Growth inhibition and relative shortening of telomere length by mannosylerythritol lipid extracts from Pseudozyma aphidis (Henniger and Windisch) Beokhut on SaOs2 human osteosarcoma cell line” is co-authored by Fatima Alferez and Maureen Mathilde Cabahug. Her thesis adviser was Stephanie Sayson, M.S. and her thesis panel members were Dr. Frances Edillo and Dr. Rommel Bacabac; Dr. Edillo supervised her preparations for the contest. Labiros is currently pursuing her master’s in the Department of Biology as a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) scholar with Dr. Edillo serving as her current M.S. thesis adviser.

The 12th PNHRS week had the theme “Research and Innovation for Equity in Health.” The event was attended by different stakeholders which provided a platform to discuss and contribute health research-based solutions to health inequity in the country.
