Authorities in the field of scientific research gathered at the University of San Carlos (USC) for the 2nd University Research Conference with the theme “Cleaning the Educational Slate: Pursuing Transformed Standards.”

The USC Office of Research organized the annual meet last March 9 and 10 at the Michael Richartz Center at USC Talamban campus that featured one keynote and three plenary sessions, as well as presentations of 36 researches and 68 research posters.

In his opening message, USC President Fr. Dionisio M. Miranda, SVD, underscored the university’s responsibility to disseminate and transmit new knowledge to the academic community, as well as private and public institutions.

Dr. Lamberto “Ambeth” Ocampo of the Ateneo de Manila University, former chair of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, opened the event with the keynote speech on “The Filipino Identity in the Light of Education Reform,” wowing the audience with his anecdotes about Rizal and fabricated Philippine regional histories.

Engr. Tina Amper, founder and CEO of TechTalks.ph and organizer of GeeksOnABeach.com (GOAB), talked in plenary about “The Global Filipino: Accelerating success through online and offline connections.” Amper is an alumna of the USC where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering.

Professor Ming-Chun Lu of the Department of Environmental Resources Management of the Chia-Nan University of Pharmacy and Science in Tianan, Taiwan was the second plenary speaker. Prof. Lu talked about the “Application of fluidized-bed Fenton process on industrial wastewater treatment.”

The third plenary speaker, Dr. Christopher Bernido, spoke about “Stochastic analysis for complex systems with memory: Handling big data in the natural and social sciences.” Bernido is an adjunct professor of the USC Department of Physics who founded the Research Center for Theoretical Physics based in Jagna, Bohol.
