USC Law receives Goipeng scholarship grant

The University of San Carlos College of Law, in partnership with Mrs. Conchita Goipeng, established the Roland H. Goipeng Scholarship Grant through a Memorandum of Agreement signed on February 5, 2025, at the Fr. Ernest Hoerdemann Building, USC Downtown Campus.

Seated (from left): USC SOLG Dean Jose Glenn C. Capanas, Mrs. Conchita Goipeng, University President Fr. Francisco Antonio T. Estepa, SVD,  VP for Administration Atty. Joan S. Largo, Atty. Wendy Goipeng-Dee. Standing (from left): Goipeng scholar Atty. Lalaine Esmeralda, OAASJP Asst. Director Margret Rosario, SOLG Asst Dean Atty. Daryl Bretch M. Largo, Ms. Mireille Goipeng Dee, and Goipeng scholar Atty. Edmund Villanueva.

The scholarship will provide financial support to junior and senior USC law students in good standing and in financial need, covering the full tuition and other school fees for every semester, with the assistance of the Office of Alumni Affairs, Scholarship and Job Placement (OAASJP).

While the current Scholarship Fund Agreement was entered into in 2025, Goipeng scholarships can be traced back to as early as 1997, formerly known as the R. H. Goipeng Foundation Scholarship Grant—with Vice President for Administration Atty. Joan S. Largo and USC Law Assistant Dean Atty. Daryl Bretch M. Largo among the first-ever recipients.

Mrs. Goipeng is a Carolinian alumna who graduated with a degree in Accountancy in 1963. When her daughter, Wendy, finished college, she wanted to study law just like her paternal grandfather, a Chinese lawyer who graduated from the University of Shanghai.

Eventually, it was Atty. Wendy’s law school journey that paved the way for the Goipeng scholarship grant.

“After she graduated from USC Law, I know that many students could not finish the degree because of all the problems in life. So, I started offering the scholarship in 1997,” Mrs. Goipeng shared.

Since then, she has helped deserving students achieve their dreams, losing count of how many scholars she helped become lawyers, judges, and professionals. It was only after January this year, on her 83rd birthday, when Mrs. Goipeng saw the impact of her generosity, of her legacy.

“We gathered all the lawyers that I sponsored, all very successful in their life—they are helping the poor and doing their job. I saw all the lawyers and I felt that at least, my life wasn’t a waste.”

Like many outstanding Carolinian alumni, Mrs. Goipeng’s Green and Gold Legacy extends beyond her personal achievements.

By granting scholarships from 1997 to the present, she has empowered deserving Carolinian law students to achieve their dreams and, more importantly, to create their own Green and Gold legacies.
