The Carolinian Mission Education with a Mission 1 Worktext, 2nd ed. (EDM 1)  and The Mission of Prophetic Dialogue Education with a Mission 2 Worktext (EDM 2) are officially recognized as USC’s first digital textbooks.

The authors of EDM 1 and EDM 2 include Esperidion Abellana, Marilou Mandawe, Jenen Dellera, Rhea Mae Yaun, Melvin Tampus, Edwin Vallecer, Ritchie Omapoy, and Sergio Alo III. Fr. Eugene Docoy, SVD is also an author of EDM 1, while Glory Ann Culanag and former USC President Fr. Roderick Salazar Jr., SVD co-authored EDM 2.

For more information about the textbooks, you may reach out to uscpublishinghouse@usc.edu.ph.

Both textbooks aim to introduce the mission of the Church in general and the imperative to participate in the mission following the examples of the university’s three patron saints, namely, St. Arnold Janssen, St. Joseph Freinademetz, and St. Charles Borromeo (also known as “San Carlos Borromeo”).  In addition, The Mission of Prophetic Dialogue discusses the mission strategy that the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) applies in undertaking missionary activities.

Both textbooks are designed to be teaching guides on the subjects. They are tailor-made for mentors and their students to assimilate the missionary character of the University and the mission of the Church. The books use the outcomes-based, student-centered methodology to ensure a total formative student experience. Outcomes are embedded in the lessons, each with concrete activities that reflect familiar life experiences in everyday moments. The content is developmental and dynamic.

Publication of digital textbooks is part of the digital transformation of USC’s official publishing arm as it addresses the shifting market trend from print to digital publishing, which is also timely and relevant as the University of San Carlos continues to implement the online learning modality. The digital Verbum Books can be accessed using the digital portal of the USC Publishing House through ISMIS.

USC Vice President for Academic Affairs Fr. Jesuraj Anthoniappen, SVD, Ph.D. and USC Publishing House Manager Julius P. Relampagos, Ph.D. were joined by the some of the authors during the launching on January 19, 2023 at the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.  Many of the authors are faculty members of the Office of General Education and Mission.
